What Is Speedometer Error?

Speedometer error is the percentage difference between the speed your dashboard shows and your actual road speed. It occurs when a tire size change alters rolling circumference without recalibrating the vehicle’s wheel speed sensor system.

Your speedometer counts wheel revolutions per second using a sensor on the ABS ring or transmission output shaft. It multiplies that count by a fixed circumference value programmed at the factory — the rolling circumference of your OEM tire.

When you fit a different tire size, the actual rolling circumference changes but the ECU’s programmed value stays the same. The result is a permanent, systematic error on every speed reading and every odometer increment.

A larger tire has a greater circumference. It covers more distance per revolution. The ECU undercounts distance covered, so the speedometer reads lower than actual speed — you are going faster than the dashboard shows. A smaller tire has the opposite effect: it causes the speedometer to read higher than actual speed.

What Causes Speedometer Error When You Change Tire Size?

Speedometer error is caused by the mismatch between your OEM tire’s rolling circumference (programmed into the ECU) and your new tire’s actual rolling circumference. Every millimetre of circumference difference creates a proportional speed reading error.
The speedometer error formula is:

Error % = ((New circumference − OEM circumference) ÷ OEM circumference) × 100

Example — 205/55R16 → 225/50R17:

OEM circumference: π × 24.88 in × 25.4 mm = 1,983 mm

New circumference: π × 25.98 in × 25.4 mm = 2,070 mm
Error = (2,070 − 1,983) ÷ 1,983 × 100 = +4.4%
At 60 mph indicated → actual 62.6 mph

The three tire dimensions that drive error are section width, aspect ratio, and rim diameter. Increasing any of them increases overall diameter and circumference, reducing speedometer reading relative to actual speed.

How Much Speedometer Error Is Acceptable?

Most automotive engineers and legal standards consider ±3% speedometer error acceptable. At 60 mph, ±3% means real speed between 58.2 and 61.8 mph. Beyond ±3%, your ABS, traction control, and odometer also become meaningfully inaccurate.

Tire engineers design OEM tire sizes so the vehicle's speedometer reads within ±1–2% of actual speed. A ±3% tolerance is the common threshold used by most automotive standards and legal regulations worldwide.

US Law

United States — No Maximum

The US has no federal law specifying maximum speedometer error for private vehicles. However, all new vehicles must meet FMVSS 101 — speedometers must show speeds up to 85 mph. Dealers and states may impose different standards for modified vehicles.

EU Law

European Union — ECE R39

ECE Regulation 39 (adopted by EU and UK) requires that speedometers must never read lower than actual speed, and the positive error must not exceed V1 = 1.1 × V2 + 6.25 mph (where V2 is actual speed). At 60 mph actual, the speedometer may show up to 72.25 mph but never below 60 mph.
